Duluth - May 16-17, 2017
At Star Legacy Foundation we know that your work with expectant families is usually joyful and uplifting. But we also know that there are those shifts when the best possible outcome requires you to reach deeply into your soul to steel yourself for the task at hand. You know that this family requires your very best in the worst of times to survive. You learned little if anything about these situations in your training – the special needs of your patient, her family, her baby; why these things happen and how best to do your job in the best way possible. Whether you are experienced and have learned a lot along the way or if you are brand new – each situation will test your stamina to its’ full limit. You will go home from your shift with your patient and her family deeply in your heavy heart knowing that there won’t be anyone you can talk to.
We know how deeply caregivers grieve too and how little support there is at those times. And that is why we hope you will join us for an upcoming Caring for Caregivers Retreat held specifically for those who care deeply when families don't take their babies home.
Where will the retreats be held?
Whenever possible we like to hold retreats at a very special location – Faith’s Lodge, 6942 Country Road C in Danbury, WI 54830. This beautiful lodge is located in a serene setting in the woods not far from Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. The lodge was established by a family in memory of their daughter Faith Ann to be a place of reflection, healing and hope for other families. Many families have experienced the Lodge at the recommendation of their care staff and through a special partnership with Faith’s Lodge, we now have a unique opportunity to share the benefits of the lodge with caregivers as well. In the event Faith’s Lodge is not convenient we will work with hospital L&D management to locate a suitable location in your area.
What happens during a Caring for the Caregiver Retreat?
Each retreat is unique and planned in partnership with the L&D Management of each hospital. Some groups are more experienced and others are very new to perinatal loss and we try to plan accordingly. Some hospitals will plan several retreats over the course of a year to allow more staff to attend and to plan the content to the level of experience for each group. Activities are a combination of self-care activities and educational opportunities as selected locally. In the past we’ve included self-care activities such as: yoga, (need more here) and educational topics such as: (insert here). However, each retreat is unique and developed with the level of experience and needs of the facility and staff.
Anyone who interacts with grieving perinatal loss families is invited to attend - physicians, midwives, clinic staff, nurses, sonographers, clergy, care managers, funeral home staff. We normally keep the attendance at each retreat to those affiliated with only one hospital in order to learn ways to support each other and for the tremendous team building opportunities this provides. Occasionally we combine staff from smaller, non-competing facilities as appropriate.
Is there a limit on how many can attend?
When held at Faith's Lodge we have a limit of 18 persons. Each person will have his/her own bed but in most cases two or three people will have to share a room. Each room has a private bath.
How long does a retreat last?
Again, all retreats are planned in partnership with L&D leadership at each hospital – but typically a retreat will start at noon on the first day, include an overnight and conclude at noon the following day.
Can I get CEUs?
You betcha! We do our best to provide CEUs for all professional audiences attending. Again – the number of CEUs for each retreat depends entirely on the content developed specifically for each group.
What is the attire?
Is there a cost?
We do ask for a small registration fee just to help defray a portion of the costs. Otherwise these retreats are completely underwritten by the Star Legacy Foundation through the generosity of our donors and supporters.
Will there be a Caring for the Caregiver Retreat for my hospital?
We hope so! If not, have your L&D manager give us a call at 952-715-7731 or email to info@starlegacyfoundation to learn more and to schedule a date for your group!
